Resource share: Speaking Up and Being Heard

On January 25th, the David Eccles School of Business hosted a Women’s Workshop titled Being Assertive: Speaking Up and Being Heard on a Team. As an introverted person that does not perceive themselves as particularly assertive, I attended hoping to learn a few pieces of useful information that would help me grow as a professional. Jennifer Cummings, Ph.D., presented research-based findings about what women bring to the workforce, important leadership qualities and how women display them, why it is difficult for women to speak up in mixed gender groups, and ways to combat (all too real) gender bias.

I left the session with concrete materials to feel more confident as a woman in the workforce and with tools to better advocate for myself and perform within a team. I highly recommend you take the time to fully watch this presentation or take it a step further and invite your colleagues (women and men alike) to watch and discuss the material with you. It could be an important first step in improving your office environment and becoming a better leader.
