1. How do you prefer to start your day?

I’ve come to realize that I’m responsible for choosing what station in my head I listen to all day, so while I’m feeding the dog and getting the coffeemaker going, I list off something I’m grateful for, something I’m looking forward to, something I can do to take care of someone, and how I want to feel when I go to bed that night. It sets me up for a good day.

2. What was your first job?

My very first job was cleaning cabins at a rustic resort in the Adirondacks. I overcame my arachnophobia that summer because there happens to be a lot of spiders in the woods and, as it turned out, I couldn’t stand to leave a cobweb in a windowsill. Come to think of it, good housekeeping is a lot like good editing. The same kind of attention to detail is necessary for both.

3. What energizes you at work?

I’m motivated by the pursuit of a well-composed creation. I love seeing something I’ve worked on come together, whether it’s a communication product, an event, a plan—whatever. It doesn’t matter if it was a solo act or a team effort. It makes me so happy to see something that didn’t previously exist I just want to go and do it all again.
